Constitution of ethnozoological semantic domains: meaning and inclusiveness of the lexeme "insect" for the inhabitants of the county of Pedra Branca, Bahia State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Santos-Fita,Dídac; Costa-Neto,Eraldo M; Schiavetti,Alexandre.
This article deals with the sociocultural construction of the 'insect' and 'animal' domains by the inhabitants of the county of Pedra Branca (municipality of Santa Terezinha, Bahia State, Brazil). The fieldwork was performed from September 2006 to July 2007. The data was obtained by means of open-ended interviews of 74 individuals of both genders whose ages ranged from 4 to 89 years old. The results show that the interviewees were unable to say in an accurate and secure way a specific definition for each domain. Depending on how a given animal is culturally interpreted, it could belong to the semantic domain 'animal' or 'insect', being representative of one or another group. However, in practice, such a distinction between these two semantic domains...

Developmental Disorders as Pathological Resilience Domains Ecology and Society
Wallace, Rodrick; ; wallace@pi.cpmc.columbia.edu.
Ecosystem resilience theory permits novel exploration of developmental psychiatric and chronic physical disorders. Structured psychosocial stress, and similar noxious exposures, can write distorted images of themselves onto child growth, and, if sufficiently powerful, adult development as well, initiating a punctuated life course trajectory to characteristic forms of comorbid mind/body dysfunction. For an individual, within the linked network of broadly cognitive psysiological and mental subsystems, this occurs in a manner almost exactly similar to resilience domain shifts affecting a stressed ecosystem, suggesting that reversal or palliation may often be exceedingly difficult. Thus resilience theory may contribute significant new perspectives to the...

Diabetes-Induced Prefrontal Nissl Substance Deficit and the Effects of Neem-Bitter Leaf Extract Treatment International Journal of Morphology
Akinola,Oluwole B; Omotoso,Olaiya G; Dosumu,Olufunke O; Akinola,Oluwafunmike S; Olotufore,Favour.
Cognitive dysfunction is reportedly associated with poorly-managed diabetes mellitus. In this study, we report the effect of oral treatment with combined leaf extract (CLE) of neem and bitter leaf on the prefrontal cortex of diabetic Wistar rats. Adult male Wistar rats were randomized to one of the following groups: control, diabetic (STZ-induced), STZ + CLE, STZ + metformin and CLE only. At euthanasia, paraffin sections of the prefrontal cortex were stained with cresyl fast violet; while malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were assayed in prefrontal homogenates. Oral CLE produced normoglycemia in the treated hyperglycaemic rats. Besides, Nissl-stained prefrontal sections showed no morphologic deficits in all the groups except the...

Diagnosing dementia and normal aging: clinical relevance of brain ratios and cognitive performance in a Brazilian sample BJMBR
Chaves,M.L.F.; Ilha,D.; Maia,A.L.G.; Motta,E.; Lehmen,R.; Oliveira,L.M..
The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic value (clinical application) of brain measures and cognitive function. Alzheimer and multiinfarct patients (N = 30) and normal subjects over the age of 50 (N = 40) were submitted to a medical, neurological and cognitive investigation. The cognitive tests applied were Mini-Mental, word span, digit span, logical memory, spatial recognition span, Boston naming test, praxis, and calculation tests. The brain ratios calculated were the ventricle-brain, bifrontal, bicaudate, third ventricle, and suprasellar cistern measures. These data were obtained from a brain computer tomography scan, and the cutoff values from receiver operating characteristic curves. We analyzed the diagnostic parameters...

Effects of a physical fitness program on memory and blood viscosity in sedentary elderly men BJMBR
Antunes,H.K.; De Mello,M.T.; Santos-Galduróz,R.F.; Galduróz,J.C.F.; Lemos,V.Aquino; Tufik,S.; Bueno,O.F.A..
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 6-month exercise program on cognitive function and blood viscosity in sedentary elderly men. Forty-six healthy inactive men, aged 60–75 years were randomly distributed into a control group (n=23) and an experimental group (n=23). Participants underwent blood analysis and physical and memory evaluation, before and after the 6-month program of physical exercise. The control group was instructed not to alter its everyday activities; the experimental group took part in the fitness program. The program was conducted using a cycle ergometer, 3 times per week on alternate days, with intensity and volume individualized at ventilatory threshold 1. Sessions were continuous and maximum duration was 60 min...

Farmers’ Cognition and Participation Willingness about New Rural Cooperative Medical System in Western Region — A Case of Guangan and Dazhou Areas in Sichuan Province AgEcon
Guo, Chuang-le.
According to the data of questionnaire survey on farmers’ cognition and participation willingness about the New Cooperative in some townships of Guangan and Dazhou Cities of Sichuan Province in the year 2008, farmers’ cognition about the New Rural Cooperative Medical System is analyzed by using the literatures, field investigation, semi-structured interviews, group discussion and other methods. At the same time, SPSS13.0 statistical software is used to carry out the Logistic Regression Analysis on the factors influencing the participation willingness of sample households. Result shows that although the New Rural Cooperative Medical System has been implemented throughout China for 6 years, there are only 57.75% households in underdeveloped western regions...

Neuroscience: unveiling the brain of Saimiri collinsi (Squirrel Monkey) Anais da ABC (AABC)
BRANCO,ÉRIKA; SENA,CAROLINE S.P. DE; PANTOJA,LUCIANA F.; SOARES,PAOLA C.; LIMA,ANA RITA DE..
Abstract Behavioral intelligence among non-human primates is a somewhat puzzling area to study, since it is closely linked to the morphology of the central nervous system. However, this morphology is still unknown to science in the case of Saimiri collinsi. As a means of assisting future studies on the social behavior of this species, we analyzed the brains of six adult females from the National Primate Center / Pará, which were sent to the Animal Morphological Research Laboratory at the Federal Rural University of Amazônia after death by natural causes. The animals were fixed in formaldehyde solution (10%) and dissected. The brains were covered externally by the dura mater, with long cerebral hemispheres, although there was a complete absence of gyri. The...

Resilience design: toward a synthesis of cognition, learning, and collaboration for adaptive problem solving in conservation and natural resource stewardship Ecology and Society
Curtin, Charles G.; MIT-USGS Science Impact Collaborative, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Mora Watershed Alliance; ccurtin@earthlink.net.
Through the resilience design approach, I propose to extend the resilience paradigm by re-examining the components of adaptive decision-making and governance processes. The approach can be divided into three core components: (1) equity design, i.e., the integration of collaborative approaches to conservation and adaptive governance that generates effective self-organization and emergence in conservation and natural resource stewardship; (2) process design, i.e., the generation of more effective knowledge through strategic development of information inputs; and (3) outcome design, i.e., the pragmatic synthesis of the previous two approaches, generating a framework for developing durable and dynamic conservation and stewardship. The design of processes that...

The study of human values in understanding and managing social-ecological systems Ecology and Society
Jones, Natalie A.; University of Queensland; n.jones3@uq.edu.au; Shaw, Sylvie; University of Queensland; sylvie.shaw@internode.on.net; Ross, Helen; University of Queensland; helen.ross@uq.edu.au; Witt, Katherine; University of Queensland; k.witt@uq.edu.au; Pinner, Breanna; University of Queensland; breannapinner@gmail.com.
The study of cognition can provide key insights into the social dimension of coupled social-ecological systems. Values are a fundamental aspect of cognition, which have largely been neglected within the social-ecological systems literature. Values represent the deeply held, emotional aspects of people’s cognition and can complement the use of other cognitive constructs, such as knowledge and mental models, which have so far been better represented in this area of study. We provide a review of the different conceptualizations of values that are relevant to the study of human-environment interactions: held, assigned, and relational values. We discuss the important contribution values research can make toward understanding how social-ecological...
